Thursday, Sep. 20 rehearsal plans

6:30 VLQ rehearsal

Anyone interested in singing at the Gospel Concert Nov. 9 with Bohemian Red is welcome. Please be at the 6:30 rehearsal this Thursday. The VLQ will be singing “Down to the River to Pray,” which Bohemian Red has sung previously. The tracks and PDF are on the website.

Guest Night planned for Oct. 18

Please come to rehearsal with names and addresses of people you would like to attend to the Guest Night on October 18. We will have postcards that can be addressed and the chorus will send them out.

Make a list right now, with at least one name. Add to the list for the next couple of weeks.  Guest night will be a great opportunity to show prospective members what we can do.

Young Men in Harmony

Chorus Members, please update your calendar with the revised schedule for Young Men in Harmony Festival

  • When: Friday, October 5
  • Where: Kelly Truax’s classroom, Prairie Point Middle School
  • 12:30- 4:30 Clinic with John Hayden as clinician, assisted by our guest quartet, Minor Details, and Harmony Hawk board members and section leaders.
  • 4:30 – 5:00 Pizza meal
  • 5:15-5:45 – Mini concert featuring Minor Details and the boys singing their two songs. Plus a Harmony Hawk VLQ. Other chorus members, we would like you (and spouses) at the mini-concert as our audience.

Membership renewal

Al Huneke, 2018 renewal

Returning last week for a brief exile to Canada (actually visiting grandkids), Al Huneke was recognized for his 13 years of membership in the chorus and the society. Al sings baritone with the chorus and in the Profound Sound quartet, and has served as Board Member at Large, and since 2015 as Treasurer.

In the photo Al is saying, “No matter how bad a day I might have had, all is forgotten when I get to rehearsal. It’s always a good time!”

Guest Night planned for Oct. 18

Please be thinking of people to invite. This is be a great opportunity to show prospective members what we can do. This is the week following CSD Contest and three weeks before the Gospel Concert.

Senior Chorus for CSD Contest

Fran Wilson will direct the CSD Seniors chorus, mostly made up of Nebraska member, at St. Charles at the Fall Convention.Their two songs will be “Darkness on the Delta” and “Old St. Louie.”To be eligible you need to be a current member of the BHS in the CSD and at least 55 years old by January 1, 2019.

Since we’re so scattered we won’t rehearse together until at the convention. Please Fran me know if you’re interested and what part you sing and I’ll send you an mp3 and music for the songs. When Fran gets a list of singers, he will send a questionnaire about what you want to wear for the performance.

Youth In Harmony Event awarded grant

Thanks to the work of Al Huneke and Bob Kerdus, our October YIH event has been awarded a $1,000 grant by the Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. With other contributions from members and supporters we are within a few hundred dollars of our the money needed to put on this event. If you have a contribution to make, please do so in the next few weeks. You can turn in a check to Gary Lindsay or Bob Kerdus this Thursday.

Board members who will be helping at the event need to complete Sexual Abuse Awareness Training. This training involves watching a number of videos and answering questions about them.. Please do this soon. The training can be accessed at this link. The video training will take about an hour and has content that is very important to know.

All members should put the Friends and Family Concert that night on their calendars as the chorus will perform. The concert will be at Prairie High, Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m.  We will perform our contest set.

Member renewal

Doug Horton, lead, has been a member of the chorus for three years. His profession is dentistry and he is active in a practice along with his son. Doug enjoys singing in quartets and has sung Singing Valentines for the past two years. Thank you, Doug, for all your contributions to the chorus. Photo by John Hayden.
