Thank you, Bob for all you have done for the chorus in these leadership roles.

Everyone in Harmony, Board discussion

At last Monday’s Board Meeting, we discussed the BHS’s Everyone in Harmony initiative. We will be gathering information on a number of items relating to membership, including which of our chapter bylaws might need to change if we started to move toward coed membership. A second step for us might be to gather information from potential members about how they would view the change, and how our sister choruses in the Sweet Adelines International view it as well.

In the meantime, we are anticipating no changes in our membership model for the immediate future.

Everyone in Harmony: Time to decide

The Barbershop Harmony Society has been posting information for sometime now about its vision for the future, and has named this “Everyone in Harmony.” If you have not been following, it is time to catch up! For those of you who have been following, it’s time to speak up as we determine the future of the Harmony Hawks Chorus. A place to start is this video from BHS.

At our next board meeting, we will be having a discussion about how our chorus will decide how to move forward on this initiative. Will we remain as an all-male chorus? Will we actively recruit women to join us? Will we make an effort to reach out across racial and sexual orientation lines in our recruitment effort? Most important, how will we make this decision?

The first step is for all chorus members to become aware of the Everyone in Harmony initiative by reading the Harmonizer, by reading Livewire as it is delivered weekly online, or going to the BHS website. This link to Frequently Asked Questions may also be a good place to start. Please make this a priority and talk to a board member about your thoughts. I will be creating a survey soon on Google Docs to gather your thoughts individually. Look for a link to that in a Weekly Update soon.

Summer Naturalization events

Metro Mix’s Extension Chords sing July 20, August and September.
Aged2Perfection sing October and December.

Recent renewals

Larry Aspleaf and Jack Ray pose for a snap at the July 12 rehearsal.

Larry Aspleaf has been a member of the BHS for 37 years and a Harmony Hawks chorus member since 1982. He has 16 Men of Note, one of the leaders in our chorus. He said the his best recruiting trick is to wear t-shirts and jackets with the chorus logo and try to engage people who comment on them in conversation ending with an invitation.

Larry has served as a board member and is currently our Chapter Historian. He sang bass in the Road Trip.

Jack Ray and Duane Scott pose for a photo at the July 12 rehearsal.

Duane Scott, bass section leader, has been a society member for nine years and a Harmony Hawk for seven years. He sings bass with Profound Sound, and has served as a board member. Duane is also our most recent newlywed!

Thank you, Duane for your service and your renewal!
