Front-line Director wanted

The Harmony Hawks Chorus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is seeking a front-line director.  For 70 years we have been entertaining audiences with our unique 4-part harmony, barbershop style music.  We have a strong history of active community involvement as well as participation in the yearly Barbershop Harmony Society contests. We are now looking for an energetic and enthusiastic director who can reignite and help grow our chorus once we can return to in-person rehearsals. A background in Barbershop music is preferred but not required. Our Society (see https://www.barbershop.org) is an incredible resource for learning about our craft. We expect our director to:

  • Help make membership in the Harmony Hawks appealing to younger singers
  • Be well organized
  • Promote chorus quartets
  • Choose/help choose music

You can expect us to:

  • Be attentive and present at rehearsals / coaching sessions
  • Make a commitment to chorus goals and the work it takes to achieve those goals
  • Have a good attitude, be flexible, and have patience.
  • Take personal responsibility – practice and learn outside of rehearsals so we can rehearse at rehearsals
  • Respect for our director, outside coaches, and fellow chorus members
  • Try / learn new skills and techniques
  • Continuously learn about the barbershop music craft
  • Give our personal best
  • Have fun
  • Sing expressively

Characteristics – Musically:

  • Understanding the barbershop singing genre
  • Willingness to continually learn the craft
  • Ability to share barbershop singing knowledge with chorus members
  • Expertise to assist in expanding members’ musical knowledge and skill
  • Strong vocal skills
  • Openness to guest coaching

Characteristics – Administratively:

  • Work within the confines of a budget
  • Assume responsibility or delegate effectively
  • Develop a strong music team
  • Manage time effectively
  • Foster quartet and ensemble development
