Year-end Message

I hope that you all had a joyous Christmas and will have a happy New Year! I would like to thank all of you for your efforts in 2023. I believe we had an extremely good year and will get even better in 2024.

Here is a recap of the activities we did this year.

We started the year with our Installation and Awards Banquet and followed that up with Singing Valentines.

In April we joined Old Capitol Chorus, being performers at their Music in the Hall, and in May we attended their annual Cookie Festival. If you didn’t attend the Cookie Festival, make sure you attend this year, as there are a whole lot of barbershoppers from around Iowa.

We got back to having our Spring Show, this year held in the sanctuary of St Paul’s Church. Thank you to the show committee for planning the show and Corridor 4, our guest quartet, for participating in the show. And thank you to our ushers, and the actors. You also did a wonderful job of singing our “Let’s Get Away From It All” theme songs.

We sang the National Anthem at the Cedar Memorial Memorial Day event. We also had a quartet sing at the top of Mount Trashmore at the flagpole dedication. Another National Anthem performance was for the Freedom Festival Flag Raising, which is the kick-off for the Freedom Festival. At the Cedar Rapids Kernels National Anthem performance, we sang without interruption from the loud train whistle this year!

We sang at three churches in the summer when their choirs are on hiatus. It has been a long time since we did this. We had around 12 performers at each of these performances.

In August we held our annual golf outing, this year at the new Ellis Park Golf Building. Thank you, Bob Kerdus, for getting us this venue at no cost! We had about 20 golfers, some from the Old Capitol Chorus. The weather was windy, but great temperatures. And the golfers did pretty well.

A new event this year was participating in the Amana Oktoberfest Parade and celebration. Thank you to Jessica for arranging this! ”Roll Out The Barrel” was never sung as many times as we sang it, in such a SHORT period of time!

Our Gospel Concert was well attended and we provide His Hands Free Clinic a nice contribution. Our guest performers were pretty awesome.

We finished out the year singing a couple of caroling gigs. We sang for the Rockwell Retirees and for the Rotary Club of Metro North Cedar Rapids. The Rotary Club performance was attended by many Old Capitol Chorus members, a Twenty-first Century Vocals member and Harmony Hawks, totaling 28 singers. It was great singing with that many people! Thank you, Chad, for arranging this.

As we move into 2024, Gary Lindsay will be our new President and will have ideas that he will want to obtain. Please give him your full support and step up when asked. We can only be as good as the efforts you put in. Thank you for being Harmony Hawks members and I look forward to continuing in my reduced roles and as the newly elected Iowa Vice-President for the Central States District.
