Update, July 27

Dave and Karen Bryant at the 2019 Gospel Concert. This was Dave’s last performance with the chorus. Dave, who had dementia, passed away Saturday, July 25.

Dave Bryant passes

Karen Bryant notified us last week that Dave had been moved to hospice, and Saturday he passed.

Speaking for the chorus, Larry Hlavachek wrote,

As you may have seen, our long-time member Dave Bryant passed away on Saturday. His dedication to Barbershop and the Harmony Hawks was apparent.
Earlier this year the Harmony Hawks presented Dave with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the annual installation and recognition dinner. I am attaching a PDF document that contains the video presentation and narrative used during the presentation. I enjoyed finding out more about Dave’s barbershop experience and old pictures. There are even some pictures of the fun times in which Dave was involved.
I would be remiss for not also mentioning his wife Karen in this message. She has been by Dave’s side since the early 60’s. She has been a rock. She and their family have watched Dave struggle with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. And, unfortunately, COVID-19 reduced their ability to spend time with Dave as his disease progressed. Thank you, Karen, Lori and Kurt for all you have done. Dave would not have been the person he was without you.
I know the Harmony Hawks will greatly miss Dave.

At January’s Recognition Banquet, Larry presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Dave, and Karen was on hand to receive it. Because of the weather, many of you missed that banquet, so please follow the link to read that tribute and enjoy the many photos Larry assembles. Dave was a member of the chorus for 65 years. You can access the PDF at this link.

2020 Gospel Concert is cancelled

At the Board meeting last Monday, the Board voted to cancel the Gospel Concert this Fall. This decision was not made lightly, but, because of the many unknowns related to COVID-19 and the need to make a decision on holding the concert in early August, we felt that we just needed to cancel the concert.

All-chapter Zoom

We will be holding a ZOOM chapter meeting on August 6, at 7:00. You all should have received an announcement from Cliff informing the chorus that John Hayden resigned his position as Chorus Director at the end of July, along with a letter from John Hayden. We will be discussing the next steps as we begin the search for a new director.

New time for Tuesday’s Zoom

Due to John attending Benton Community’s boys baseball tournament game, Tuesday’s Zoom rehearsals will be at 8 p.m. for leads and 8:30 for tenors. Thursday’s rehearsal times will be the usual. Songs for the night will be:

  • Can You Feel The Love Tonight
  • Roll Out of Bed With A Smile
  • Alexander’s Ragtime Band

Here are the links for each night.

Golf outing

The formal golf event has been cancelled, but there are still people planning to golf on August 7 at 4:00 at the Wildcat Golf Course. Six people are currently playing, with room for two more to complete a second foursome. Contact Larry Aspleaf , (319) 396-4606‬, if you are interested in playing.
